Step-By-Step Guide To Cleaning Your Contact Lenses

Step-By-Step Guide To Cleaning Your Contact Lenses

When it comes to vision correction, contact lenses and glasses are your best friends but compared to glasses, daily contact lenses in Singapore win the popularity contest. Not only are they comfortable, convenient, and perfect for those who are always on the go, but they also hide the fact that you need a prescription, giving you a more natural appearance, unhindered by glasses.

But do you know that nearly 80 to 90% of contact lens wearers are not cleaning their lenses properly? You might be in this category and not even realise it! To avoid any kind of eye infection and maintain your eye health, here are some easy steps to keep your monthly contact lens clean for crystal clear vision.

1. Empty your contact lens case of the old solution and rinse your case with fresh contact lens solution

Always use a fresh contact lens solution to clean your monthly and daily contact lenses and the case before putting your contact lens in. Never place your contact lens in your old solution as it will be filled with nasties like germs, bacteria and even protein build-ups. Avoid reusing or ‘topping off’ old lens solution as doing so may cause eye irritation and infections.

2. Allow your contact lens container to air-dry before sealing it

Once your container is rinsed out, allow it to air-dry completely before sealing it. The best possible way to air-dry the contact lens case is by placing it upside down on a clean paper towel. This method not only allows the excess water to drain out perfectly, but it also keeps the inside clean from any foreign particles found in the air. Once it is dry, seal it up with the cap and store it in a cool, dry place.

3. Fill your clean contact lens case with fresh solution daily before soaking your contact lens

Do not use tap water or saliva to fill your contact lens case as that can increase your risk of eye irritation and infection. The daily contact lenses solution works as a disinfectant that successfully removes germs, bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms that can be in your contact lens.

4. Wash your hands with soap and water before touching the contact lenses

Before touching or removing your contact lens, make sure you wash your hands with antibacterial soap for at least 20 seconds under warm running water and dry them with a lint-free towel. This step will remove any bacteria, dust or oil that could have been on your hands.

5. Gently rub the lenses back and forth to clean them

Once you have removed your monthly contact lens from your eyes with clean hands, wash your lenses with fresh solution by rubbing them back and forth gently. This motion will remove any lingering particles on the lenses. Always remember not to use anything other than a multipurpose contact lens solution to clean your lenses.

For daily disposable contact lenses, you should use saline solution to clean and rinse them.

6. Soak your clean lenses according to the manufacturer’s recommended time

Once your monthly lenses and lens case are clean, fill your case with the solution and soak your lenses in them according to the manufacturer’s recommended time. There should always be usage instructions whether your contact lenses were purchased online or in a physical store in Singapore. Most solutions require about 4 to 8 hours of soaking to disinfect the lenses. Never soak your lenses in tap water, drinking water, salt water or even saliva as they are not a disinfectant and would not be able to keep your lenses clean.

Apart from these steps, here are some key pointers when it comes to contact lenses.

  • Always be gentle and clean when handling the lenses to prevent any tears or damage to them.
  • Store your contact case in a cool, dry environment to prevent bacterial growth.
  • Never reuse a dirty contact lens solution no matter what!
  • Take note of the left and right sides of your contact lens case to avoid mixing them up when you put them in your eyes.
